Underground in Paris : our 10 best stations
The parisian underground has more than 300 stops and millions of people take it every year. We decided to pick up the most beautiful and artistic stops so that you can take them more often:)
On the other hand we want to chase prejudices from some people’s minds claiming that the metro can not be a place of beauty and rest.
Louvres-Rivoli
That stop on the line 1 deserves the first place in the top .
Why ? …well because in terms of originality that stop is throwing shade at all the other ones. Indeed a sample of works of art is exhibiting there. The reproduction of masterpieces can be seen there and for the real ones the Louvre Museum is not far 😉
Nearby: You have the Louvre museum, the Jardin des Tuileries.
Arts et métiers
In that stop there is no place that has been left empty, for the whole vault and walls are covered by copper sheets. You are entering into a vessel for the cogs and the portholes are here to make you feel like you aboard a ship;) . The stop is so captivating that it’s worth missing your métro to take a pic there 😉
Nearby: You have the Musée des arts et métiers, the conservatoire national des arts et métiers.
Bastille
The storming of the Bastille is so embedded in France’s roots that it needed to have its glimpse of history in the underground…after all
Bastille on line 1, 5 and 8 is a work of art in the open art. The stop is barely covered for we can see the sky at a moment. On the wall we have a fresco portraying some key symbols of the French Revolution. It’s worth the visit;)
Nearby: You have Place de la Bastille, Opera Bastille
Passy
We love that stop not for what it has inside to tell you the truth, but because to reach Passy on line 6 you have to pass by the bridge El Hakeim that offers a splendid view on the Eiffel Tower;) Even though it is part of the routine, you still see people eager to capture the view from behind the window. It changes from the darkness from where you go through with most of the others stops.
Nearby: You have the Musée du vin, or the pont Bir-Hakeim
Franklin Roosevelt
Design and cleanness are the watchwords to describe that stop. Black oval-shaped seats and black suspensions combined with a yellow wall…the mix is here and it’s perfect;)
The warm toned is well-reasoned because it feels good to be comfortable in a crowded and noisy crossroads:)
Nearby: You have the Palais de la découverte, the Grand Palais, the Petit Palais.
Concorde
The station is a reminder that french revolution has its vestige right above for the guillotine was held in the place. Regarding the inside of the stop the whole vault is covered by thousands of porcelain tiles and each has a letter engraved on it. Therefore you have a giant crosswords;) Just amazing .
Nearby: You have Place de la concorde, Jardin des Tuileries, musée de l’orangerie.
Assemblée nationale
The french national assembly is not far from the stop, and to give its citizens an atmosphere worthy of the political place, the talent of an artist have been required. Jean-Charles Blais decided to put posters on the walls with extract from the french constitution. You can sit on the red-brick chairs before the screens put on the walls too…wow 😉
Nearby: you find the National Assembly
Tuileries
Modern art recounting the history of the underground combining texts and images is a real pleasure for the eyes. Marilyn Monroe staring at you or Jospéhine Baker striking a pose in a 20’s outfit…it makes the heads twirl and look twice:)
Nearby: You have the famous Jardin des Tuileries, la place Vendôme, Arc de triomphe du Caroussel.
Cité
On line 4, you have Cité, a stop that is standing out from the others for it is 20 meters depth, you have elevators to reach the exit above. Plus, a row of bent street lamps is welcoming its parisians;)
Nearby: You have the Sainte-Chapelle, Notre Dame and a market called marché aux fleurs Reine Elizabeth II
Cluny la sorbonne
She is opening up the top for she is an original stop.It will make you wanna look up because the arch is covered by mosaics made by Jean Bazaine. What an honor to have a station decorated by an avant gardist artist.
Nearby: We find the Quartier Latin, Sorbonne.
Hope you enjoyed this top! 🙂
